Bogotá Residents Ditch Expensive Gyms for Free Outdoor Bootcamps
Residents have swapped indoor memberships for group sessions in public spaces after costs rose and schedules tightened.
How we reported this
Outdoor fitness sessions in Bogotá recorded a 38 percent increase in weekly participants between January and June 2026, according to city recreation department figures released last month.
The change stems from higher monthly gym fees that now average 180,000 Colombian pesos and from longer work commutes along corridors such as Avenida Caracas. Many residents report they need activities that fit around 7 a.m. starts and weekend family duties without requiring another transport leg.
Park Circuits Replace Studio Classes
Programs run by the Secretaría Distrital de Cultura, Recreación y Deporte now operate four mornings a week at Parque Simón Bolívar and on the eastern edge of Parque de los Hippies in Chapinero. Instructors lead 45-minute circuits that combine body-weight intervals with mobility drills on the grass, followed by optional five-minute breathing sequences. A second operator, the local collective Movimiento Usaquén, added sunset walks along Carrera 15 every Tuesday and Thursday that end at the Usaquén market square.
Both initiatives keep the per-session cost at 12,000 pesos, payable on site by cash or transfer. Sessions began expanding in March after the city extended Ciclovía hours on Sundays to include guided mobility stops between Calle 26 and Calle 53.
Practical Next Steps for New Participants
Anyone can register on the same day at either park entrance; no advance booking is required. Arrive by 6:45 a.m. on weekdays or 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays to claim a numbered mat. Bring water and a light layer for the early-morning chill at altitude. Those who prefer structured tracking can download the city app that logs attendance and issues monthly participation certificates used by some employers for wellness reimbursements.
