Bogotá's Metro Line 1 Construction Reaches Critical Phase for Completion Timeline

Bogotá's Metro Line 1 reached 50% completion as of March 2025 and remains on schedule to open in 2028 after receiving US$530 million from the World Bank for its most intensive construction phase.

Metro Line 1 Status and Next Phase

The Instituto de Desarrollo Urbano continues to manage 113 mobility infrastructure projects that include expansions along Carrera Séptima, Autopista Norte and the new Calle 13. These works run alongside the Metro Line 1 effort and require coordinated scheduling so that road and rail projects do not interfere during the final construction years before the 2028 opening.

Second Metro Line and Western Regiotram

The Second Metro Line carries a planned investment of USD 3.8 billion for a 16-kilometer route, of which 15.1 km will run underground and serve 11 stations. Once operational from 2031 the line is expected to serve over 2.5 million people. The Western Regiotram commuter rail, whose construction began on December 21, 2023, will link Facatativá, Madrid, Funza and Mosquera to Bogotá in 45 minutes as the country's first inter-municipal electric train.

Wastewater Treatment Investment

A separate USD 1.5 billion wastewater treatment plant is under development to treat 70% of Bogotá's waste waters and 100% of Soacha's, forming one of Latin America's largest such facilities. Decisions on how this project interfaces with the mobility works will determine construction sequencing through the coming years.

City agencies must now determine the order of remaining contracts, station integration points and traffic management measures along the named corridors to keep the 2028 Metro Line 1 target on track while advancing the later Second Metro Line and Regiotram timelines.
