Bogotá Leads Latin America With Electric Buses and Hydrogen Technology

Bogotá plans to operate the largest fleet of electric buses outside China, targeting more than 1,485 units to carry roughly 180,000 passengers each day. This scale of deployment in one Latin American city marks a concrete distinction in how the capital applies technology to cut emissions from its busiest routes.

Local production supports the shift

Ecopetrol produces high-purity green hydrogen at 99.99 percent in Bogotá for a pilot with Transmilenio. The project runs on a 165 kW PEM electrolyzer and feeds the Integrated Public Transport System directly. The same system already runs 361 hybrid buses that lower greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 92,000 tons of CO2 each year.

These steps tie into the city's stated aim of carbon neutrality by 2050, with a 15 percent emissions cut by 2024 and a 50 percent reduction by 2030 measured against 2020 levels. Transportation accounts for a large share of Bogotá's total output, so the bus program addresses the biggest single source.

Events and supply chain growth

The EXPO GREEN TECH 2025 event, held June 17-18, 2025, brought together firms working on energy, circular economy and ecological transition for the South American market. Bogotá-based Green Technology Ll S.A.S., founded in June 2024, reported a 1,295.59 percent rise in net income in 2025 while employing 108 people as of 2026, showing early commercial activity around vehicle components.

The combination of large-scale fleet targets, on-site hydrogen output and measurable annual reductions gives Bogotá's technology work a practical focus that other cities have yet to match at this volume. Observers will watch how the 1,485 electric units perform once fully in service and whether the hydrogen pilot expands beyond the initial Transmilenio routes.
